Sistema legnoso n°2 : “Femine bedside table”

The project is divided into two experimental phases: in both I used a process inspired by plants growth where the development happens through a continuous circle of action, answer and recalibration. The morphogenic growing process is based on inflatable spindles and bio composite and it answers to environmental and structural imputs such as gravity, weight, temperature, air, generating information that are reintegrated in further decisions. The pneumatic pressure acts in similar way of the hydrostatic pressure; the latex air chamber presses against the bio-composite as the protoplasm presses against the cellulose cell walls (cellular turgidity). 

The form emerges from the continuous interaction between human intention, process constraints and matter behavior. The process naturally produces forms that the human brain interprets as natural because they follow some recurring rules in biological system such as branching, continuity of fluxus, gradual variation of sections, local adaptivity to ground stress, no uniforn growing. The process constitute a morphologic system not completed closed; the matter can join chemically and remain alive; this means that the final form is a temporary configuration potentially evolving.  

The phase n°2Femine bedside table has applied the results obtained to design a functional structure in the form of a bedside table (the study of the “scheleton”), where the materials and the organic shape have given the object an unexpected manageability and mechanical resistance.The goal is to replicate the wood growth strategy at the microscopic level: the experiment mimics the hierarchical structure of wood (cotton for cellulose, natural resins for lignin) creating an object both funcional  and aesthetic. Even if designed to support a load of 5 kg the prototype passed progressive extreme load tests, going from 20 kg up to a peak of 24.2 kg.
